Business Development Underwriter, Agri & Personal Lines

About the role

IAG, the largest general insurance group in Australia and New Zealand, is looking for a Business Development Underwriter for its Agri & Personal Lines business. The role combines technical expertise, commercial insight and strong industry relationships to influence underwriting decisions, support growth and contribute to strategic outcomes across the portfolio. It is a permanent full-time position based in Melbourne or Ballarat.

Key responsibilities

• Build relationships with brokers, authorised representatives and industry stakeholders to identify new opportunities and support growth.
• Act as a trusted technical expert for complex farm insurance risks, guiding underwriting outcomes.
• Represent the business in market-facing activities such as customer visits, industry events and partner engagements.
• Support underwriting capability through coaching, mentoring and knowledge sharing.
• Work with underwriting, portfolio and distribution teams on performance, risk management and growth initiatives.
• Identify ways to improve underwriting quality, capability and customer outcomes.

Required profile

• Deep expertise in farm or agricultural insurance underwriting, able to assess complex risks and make sound commercial decisions.
• Strong understanding of rural customers, the agricultural landscape and the factors that drive risk and growth.
• Credibility and deep sales experience building trusted relationships with brokers, customers and stakeholders.
• Ability to influence outcomes, challenge thinking and give expert guidance on underwriting matters.
• Collaborative approach to coaching and mentoring, and confidence representing an insurer in market-facing settings.
