Backfill Engineer – Underground Mining

About the role

The Backfill Engineer will lead the technical design, planning and operational oversight of all backfill activities within an underground mining operation. Working in the Backfill Engineering Division, you will own the full backfill cycle from material selection to execution and continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities

• Develop fill plans, exposure sequences, inrush exclusion zones and pour instructions and communicate them to the operational team.
• Prepare work instructions for backfill‑related activities, including reticulation and barricade plans.
• Manage mix design and fill recipe development, updating recipes based on QA/QC results and operational feedback.
• Perform routine QA/QC of backfill materials, maintain the associated database and provide inputs for engineering decisions.
• Troubleshoot backfill‑related issues with underground operators and monitor daily production and system downtime.
• Develop and maintain weekly and three‑month backfill schedules aligned with the broader mine plan.
• Lead safety compliance through site inspections, procedure reviews and task observations.
• Chair regular backfill meetings, identify bottlenecks and drive corrective action plans.
• Identify and lead improvement projects to optimise system performance, reliability and cost efficiency.

Required profile

• Degree in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or a related discipline.
• 2–8 years of experience in underground mining operations, with at least 2 years in a dedicated backfill engineering role.
• Hands‑on experience with paste fill systems.
• Eligibility to work in Australia and willingness to work on a site roster if required.
