Waste and Litter Collection Officer

About the role

The Waste and Litter Collection Officer is a frontline member of Hume City Council’s Waste and Sustainability team, responding to illegal dumping incidents across assigned residential zones. You will engage with the community, assess waste, and ensure safe removal while complying with environmental regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Respond promptly to reports of illegal dumping within allocated zones.
• Assess dumped material for evidence, record findings and refer for investigation.
• Safely remove small volumes of waste, hand‑load/unload vehicles and follow manual‑handling procedures.
• Transport waste in line with EPA regulations and Council safety protocols.
• Log service requests, actions, photos and outcomes in the Council’s CRM system.
• Utilise IntraMaps, WasteEdge and other mapping tools to manage and complete jobs.
• Apply correct hygiene and handling practices for hazardous materials.

Required profile

• Understanding of municipal amenity services and relevant legislation.
• Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse community.
• Experience in waste services, compliance or a field‑based public interface role.
• Current Victorian driver’s licence and required safety certifications (White Card, Asbestos Awareness, Traffic Control, Manual Handling, Hazardous Substances, First Aid/CPR).

Required skills

• Proficiency with IntraMaps.
• Experience using WasteEdge.
• Familiarity with CRM systems for incident logging.
• Ability to work with mapping and geographic information tools.
