Technical Director – Urban and Regional Planning

About the role

We are seeking a Technical Director – Planner to join our WA Environment Business Group, delivering a wide range of urban and regional planning projects for government and private clients across Western Australia.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership, strategic advice and resource coordination across a diverse portfolio of major projects spanning multiple sectors.
• Act as Technical Director/reviewer on the design and delivery of complex urban and regional planning projects, ensuring fit‑for‑purpose outcomes, quality and compliance.
• Build and maintain client relationships, lead key pursuits and contribute to proposals, reports and technical assessments.
• Support the growth and development of the Planning team through mentoring, supervision, knowledge sharing and technical training.
• Liaise with Commonwealth, State and Local Government clients, agencies, internal specialists, sub‑consultants and other key stakeholders.
• Provide visible leadership and technical coaching to uplift capability, support succession and role‑model GHD’s values.

Required profile

• Relevant tertiary qualification in Urban and Regional Planning or a related discipline.
• 10+ years’ experience in an urban or regional planning environment, preferably within a consulting setting in Western Australia.
• Strong knowledge of Western Australia’s planning system, including legislative and policy frameworks and approval processes.
• Demonstrated client leadership experience, including account management, business development and work‑winning with government or major private sector clients.
• Well‑developed commercial, risk management and communication skills with the ability to provide strategic advice and make sound technical and business decisions.
• Collaborative, client‑focused approach with credibility to influence outcomes, develop people and build high‑performing teams.
