Staff Software Engineer (Node.js / TypeScript) - Payments

About the role

CommBank is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for its Payments Data Services team, which builds data products, APIs and platforms that power payment experiences across the bank. The role provides technical leadership, influences engineering strategy across squads, mentors engineers and helps build resilient, scalable platforms. It is based in Sydney or Melbourne.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership across squads, set engineering direction and raise technical standards.
• Design, build and evolve secure, scalable and resilient software platforms.
• Lead architecture and design decisions for complex distributed systems.
• Drive modernisation using cloud-native and event-driven architectures.
• Champion engineering excellence across quality, testing, observability, security and operational excellence.
• Foster a DevSecOps culture, owning solutions end-to-end from design and development through deployment and production operations.
• Mentor engineers and partner with Product, Architecture, Security and Operations.
• Drive adoption of AI-enabled engineering practices and reusable platform capabilities.

Required profile

• Experienced software engineer who enjoys solving difficult technical problems and influencing engineering beyond their team.
• Ideal background: leading technical direction across multiple teams, coaching and mentoring engineers, driving engineering standards, and taking ownership of software across its full lifecycle with a DevSecOps mindset.
• Deep expertise in several areas is valued; experience across every technology is not required.

Required skills

• Backend: Node.js and TypeScript, building APIs, microservices and distributed applications, cloud-native engineering (AWS EKS, ECS, Lambda, Aurora PostgreSQL, S3, CloudWatch), Kubernetes, Terraform or CloudFormation, CI/CD.
• Distributed systems: event-driven architectures, Kafka or similar messaging platforms, API-first design, scalability and performance optimisation.
