Solicitor – Regulatory & Litigation Specialist

About the role

The Office of the General Counsel within the Department of Government Services is seeking a Solicitor to provide high‑quality regulatory advice and manage litigation on behalf of the department. You will work closely with the Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV) Legal team and support a range of enforcement and compliance initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advice on regulatory matters, including evidence assessment for potential regulatory action.
• Manage and conduct legal proceedings arising from breaches of legislation administered by DGS.
• Prepare legal briefs, materials, and support documents for investigations and prosecutions.
• Appear as a solicitor‑advocate before Victorian courts and tribunals, including the VCAT, Magistrates’ Court, County Court, Supreme Court, and the Federal Court of Australia.
• Support project teams conducting complex investigations and compliance activities, such as the Underquoting and Renting Taskforces.

Required profile

• Qualified solicitor admitted to practice in Victoria.
• Ability to conduct legal analysis and provide timely, accurate advice under supervision.
• Experience or strong interest in public law, consumer law, and regulatory enforcement.
• Strong written and oral communication skills for drafting opinions and presenting arguments.
