Senior Utility Locator

About the role

Australian Locating Services is seeking an experienced Senior Utility Locator to join its Greater Sydney team. This field‑based role involves locating underground services, preparing detailed reports, and collaborating with surveyors on multidisciplinary projects.

Key responsibilities

• Locate and identify underground services using electromagnetic locating equipment and ground penetrating radar.
• Interpret BYDA plans, construction drawings and site evidence to verify service locations.
• Mark services clearly, communicate findings and limitations to clients and site crews.
• Prepare accurate field notes, photographs, sketches and reporting information.
• Work alongside surveyors on utility mapping, non‑destructive detection (NDD) and larger multidisciplinary projects.

Required profile

• Pride in thorough, accurate fieldwork and the judgement to recognise when further investigation is needed.
• Confidence working independently while seeking advice when required.
• Clear communication skills and a practical approach with clients and site teams.
• Commitment to safety, reliable reporting and continuous improvement.
• Interest in sharing experience and contributing ideas.

Required skills

• Current CERTLOC certification.
• Practical proficiency with electromagnetic locating equipment and GPR.
• Solid understanding of AS5488 and utility quality levels.
• Ability to interpret BYDA plans and assess site conditions.
• Construction White Card and a valid driver’s licence.
• Experience with concrete scanning, utility mapping, CCTV or NDD (highly regarded).
• Relevant tickets such as RIW, WPCG, ESI, Workers on Foot, confined space and gas testing.
