Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

About the role

Climatech Group, a leading Australian mechanical services contractor, is expanding its Data Centre Division and seeks a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to own and lead the design of large‑scale hyperscale data centre cooling packages from concept through detailed design, prefabrication and construction support.

Key responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design of chilled water plants, large‑bore pipework, air‑side systems and controls integration for hyperscale data centre projects.
• Own delivery of staged design milestones (concept, 60 %, 90 %, IFC/LOD300‑LOD500) against demanding programmes.
• Act as Climatech’s senior technical voice in design reviews and coordination workshops with clients, head contractors, consultants and certifiers.
• Prepare and approve design deliverables including drawings, calculations, equipment selections, technical submittals and design review responses.
• Drive design for prefabrication, collaborating with procurement and construction teams to maximise off‑site manufacture.
• Lead, mentor and grow a team of mechanical design engineers and BIM/drafting resources across multiple concurrent projects.
• Support construction and commissioning teams through integrated systems testing and handover.

Required profile

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering with 8 + years of mechanical/HVAC design experience, including senior or lead design roles.
• Proven experience designing mechanical services for data centres or other mission‑critical facilities; hyperscale experience highly regarded.
• Deep technical knowledge of chilled water systems, central plant, air‑side design and BMS/controls integration.
• Experience delivering staged design packages under D&C or head‑contract models with formal design review processes.
• Working knowledge of Australian Standards, the NCC and, preferably, Uptime Institute tier and redundancy concepts (N+1, 2N).
• Strong written communication skills for contractual design correspondence and coordination workshops.
• CPEng / Professional Engineer registration (NSW/VIC) is highly regarded but not essential.
