Senior Legal Adviser

About the role

The Department of Health Tasmania is seeking a Senior Legal Adviser to provide high‑level legal support across the health system, including legislative review, contract analysis and liability management. You will work closely with senior executives, the Minister for Health and external agencies to shape legal policy and ensure compliance.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate with stakeholders to prepare legislative advice, cabinet submissions, parliamentary papers and instructions to the Office of Parliamentary Counsel.
• Research emerging legal issues, conduct investigations and produce detailed advice for senior management.
• Manage the department’s legal liability claims and coordinate with the Solicitor‑General, Director of Public Prosecutions and insurers.
• Draft high‑quality legal documentation, correspondence and interpretative material for internal and external audiences.
• Represent the department in negotiations and influence outcomes across multiple forums.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in legislative development, review and interpretation within a multi‑stakeholder environment.
• Strong understanding of complaint handling, dispute resolution and legal policy formulation.
• Proven ability to produce accurate, well‑structured legal drafts and advise senior executives.
• Excellent communication skills for liaising with internal and external parties.
