Senior Earthing & Bonding Engineer

About the role

KBR is seeking an experienced Senior Earthing & Bonding Engineer to lead the design of safe, compliant earthing, bonding and lightning protection systems for major rail and energy projects in Melbourne. You will work autonomously and within multidisciplinary teams to deliver high‑performance solutions for HV substations, rail systems and complex transport infrastructure.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver detailed earthing and bonding designs for HV substations, stations, tunnels and line‑wide rail systems.
• Conduct complex earthing studies including soil resistivity modelling, step‑and‑touch potential assessments, and stray current management.
• Develop lightning protection, surge protection and equipotential bonding networks, producing calculations, schematics and installation documentation.
• Review and interpret utility standards, rail safety requirements and national electrical codes to ensure compliance.
• Perform site investigations and testing such as soil resistivity and current injection testing to support design development.
• Coordinate with primary, secondary, structural and civil engineering teams, contractors and equipment suppliers throughout the design and delivery lifecycle.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (Washington Accord accredited or equivalent); Chartered status (CPEng/RPEQ/RPEV) desirable.
• Proven experience delivering earthing, bonding and lightning protection systems in rail, substations, utilities or major infrastructure projects.
• Strong communication and stakeholder coordination skills with ability to manage multiple design tasks in fast‑paced environments.

Required skills

• Proficiency in CDEGS or SESShield earthing modelling software.
• Experience with soil resistivity testing and current injection testing.
• Design of HV substation earthing grids and lightning protection systems.
• Understanding of traction return systems, stray current control and metallic asset bonding.
