Research Fellow - Soil Microbial Ecology

About the role

The Australian Rivers Institute at Griffith University seeks a highly motivated Research Fellow (Level 1‑2) to join an interdisciplinary team focused on soil science, molecular biology and microbial ecology. The role involves leading research on soil and environmental biodiversity, functionality and ecosystem health.

Key responsibilities

• Undertake research on biogeochemical processes and develop management practices for natural and managed ecosystems.
• Design and conduct DNA/RNA‑based assays (metagenomics, amplicon sequencing, qPCR, transcriptomics) to characterise soil microbial communities and functional genes.
• Analyse large genomic datasets, interpret microbial community structure and link molecular signatures to ecological processes.
• Publish high‑quality research, contribute to grant applications and present findings at national and international conferences.
• Supervise and mentor research students and assistants, and collaborate with external stakeholders.

Required profile

• PhD in Microbiology, Molecular Microbiology, Microbial Ecology, Soil Science, Environmental Sciences or a related field.
• Strong practical experience with DNA/RNA‑based assays and genomic data analysis.
• Proven record of publishing in high‑impact peer‑reviewed journals and presenting at conferences.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams.
• Unrestricted working rights in Australia (no visa sponsorship).

• Salary range: Research Fellow Grade 1 ($91,705‑$107,421) or Grade 2 ($117,076‑$139,032) plus 17% superannuation.
