Range Operator – Defence Training Support

About the role

The Range Operator will join Ventia’s team at the Puckapunyal Defence Base, supporting Defence training activities across the range training areas. This hands‑on position involves preparing ranges, operating target systems, and assisting with land and bushfire management in an outdoor, team‑focused environment.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare training ranges for Defence exercises and live‑fire activities.
• Operate and maintain electronic target systems and range equipment.
• Support Defence personnel during training and ensure compliance with safety orders.
• Conduct range and site inspections, and perform general maintenance and land‑management tasks.
• Manufacture, repair and maintain targets, and carry out cleaning and housekeeping across the training area.
• Assist with environmental and vegetation management programs.
• Participate in first‑response bushfire firefighting activities within qualification limits.
• Operate vehicles, machinery and equipment as required.

Required profile

• Reliable, safety‑focused and able to work in a physically active outdoor environment.
• Current Manual Driver’s Licence.
• Ability to read maps and navigate remote locations.
• Basic computer skills.
• Strong commitment to teamwork and safety.

Required skills

• Manual Driver’s Licence (Medium Rigid or Heavy Rigid preferred).
• First Aid and CPR certification.
• Experience operating communication equipment.
• Experience using power tools and chainsaws.
