Principal Surface Water Engineer

About the role

SLR Consulting is seeking a Principal Surface Water Engineer to join its APAC Hydrology and Hydrogeology team. The role can be based in Brisbane or Townsville and will lead surface water assessments and modelling for a range of high‑profile clients across mining, infrastructure, renewables and built environment sectors.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver surface water environmental assessments and design projects for multiple sectors, ensuring timely delivery within budget.
• Develop, run and review hydraulic and hydrologic models (e.g., TUFLOW, RORB, WBNM, XP‑RAFTS) and prepare high‑quality technical reports.
• Build and maintain relationships with internal teams and external clients, contributing to business development and proposal preparation.
• Provide expert advice on best practice principles, water‑related structures design and regulatory compliance.

Required profile

• 10‑15+ years of industry experience, preferably within a consultancy environment.
• Registered Professional Engineer Queensland (RPEQ) or ability to obtain registration within six months of hire.
• Strong commercial acumen and proven experience managing projects through their full lifecycle.
• Excellent communication, report writing and interpersonal skills.

Required skills

• Two‑dimensional hydraulic modelling using TUFLOW.
• Hydrologic modelling with RORB, WBNM and XP‑RAFTS.
• Familiarity with MUSIC or GoldSim (preferred but not essential).
• Knowledge of Australian rainfall‑runoff guidelines, stormwater management and flood risk analysis.
