About the role
The Principal Legal Officer provides high‑quality legal advice and leads complex litigation for the Health Ombudsman. This senior position supports the Legal Services Division by mentoring junior officers and assisting directors in team management.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver professional, timely written and oral legal advice on complex issues such as statutory interpretation, confidentiality, human rights, crime and corruption, public interest disclosures, administrative, evidence, criminal, hospital, health and contract law.
- Conduct litigation in disciplinary proceedings, including drafting referrals, advising on evidence, liaising with legal representatives and preparing matters for hearings.
- Undertake additional legal actions as directed, including prosecutions on behalf of the Health Ombudsman.
- Manage court caseloads, comply with court directions, timetables and orders, and attend directions hearings.
