Principal Cyber Security Advisor

About the role

The Australian Federal Police is seeking a Principal Cyber Security Advisor to lead and deliver advanced cyber security services. This senior position works on a 36‑month contract, offering a hybrid work model with required on‑site presence in Canberra.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct cybersecurity risk assessments and develop system security plans in line with the ISM and PSPF frameworks.
• Perform certification and accreditation activities for government systems, ensuring compliance with agency requirements.
• Analyse vulnerabilities, threats and security controls to determine residual risk against protective security obligations.
• Develop and maintain accreditation documentation, including risk assessments, security plans and compliance evidence.
• Support audits, IRAP assessments and security reviews to validate compliance with government security frameworks.
• Maintain up‑to‑date technical knowledge through professional development and mentor junior staff.

Required profile

• Ability to obtain Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV1) clearance specific to the AFP.
• Proven experience in senior cyber security roles within government or large organisations.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in small and cross‑functional teams.
• Accountability for delivering high‑quality work within agreed timeframes.
