Principal Avionics Engineer - C-27J Spartan

About the role

Northrop Grumman Australia is looking for a Principal Avionics Engineer to support the Royal Australian Air Force's C-27J Spartan fleet. The role combines technical leadership, aircraft design, airworthiness, certification and operational problem-solving on a live defence aviation capability. It involves investigating complex aircraft issues, developing engineering solutions, supporting modifications and contributing to the safety and effectiveness of the fleet, with opportunities to develop engineering authority and certification responsibilities and to mentor engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Lead technical investigations into aircraft avionics issues
• Develop and review aircraft modifications and repairs
• Support flight trials, testing and systems integration activities
• Conduct safety and risk assessments
• Provide specialist avionics advice to internal and external stakeholders
• Support airworthiness and certification activities
• Mentor and coach engineers across the team
• Contribute to engineering excellence and continuous improvement

Required profile

• Australian citizenship is required; the position carries an AU-Protected (baseline) clearance and is subject to ITAR, so nationality may affect suitability
• Police checks and employment screening verification are required
• Extensive aviation engineering experience
• Exposure to aircraft certification, design, systems engineering or airworthiness
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
• Desire to mentor and develop engineering capability

Required skills

• Degree-qualified engineering credentials in Avionics, Electronics, Electrical or similar
• Knowledge of military or civil aviation regulations
