Principal Advisor – Communications

About the role

The Strategic Communication team is seeking a Principal Advisor – Communications to lead a dedicated group of communication professionals. This senior position will shape and deliver communication and engagement solutions that promote departmental initiatives, connect Queenslanders to programs, and reach external stakeholders through targeted messaging.

Key responsibilities

• Demonstrate and develop cultural capability to support inclusive practices aligned with the Human Rights Act 2019.
• Lead and manage a team of communication specialists, overseeing internal communications, stakeholder engagement, website content, and corporate communications.
• Co‑facilitate the development, delivery and evaluation of communication plans for specific projects and initiatives.
• Deliver communication projects within approved budgets, ensuring stakeholder consultation.
• Contribute to innovative communication strategies, including social media and digital marketing.
• Provide expert advice on campaigns, crisis communication and issues management to senior officers.
• Collaborate with the Media team to align key messages across platforms.
• Ensure compliance with corporate governance, whole‑of‑government policies and editorial standards.
• Prepare complex submissions, briefs, reports and correspondence on communication matters.
• Maintain effective relationships with departmental staff, the Minister’s office, Director‑General and external agencies.

Required profile

• Strong commitment to cultural capability and inclusive communication practices.
• Proven experience leading communication teams and delivering strategic communication plans.
• Ability to manage budgets and resources for communication projects.
• Experience advising senior leaders on communication, crisis and issues management.
• Excellent stakeholder engagement and relationship‑building skills.
