Primary Electrical Engineer - Substations

About the role

Egis is hiring a Primary Electrical Engineer for its National Substations design team in Melbourne. You will develop designs for brownfield and greenfield substations across Australia at MV, HV and EHV voltages, working through the design stages from preliminary to issued for construction.

Key responsibilities

• Design primary systems: substation layouts, high-voltage equipment (transformers, circuit breakers, voltage and current transformers, disconnectors, capacitor banks, neutral earthing resistors), busbar and bay layouts, conduits and ducts, cable and conductor fittings, earthing, lightning protection and materials lists
• Ensure compliance with agreed scope and standards such as AS 2067, AS 62271 and IEC 60076
• Carry out insulation coordination, short-circuit force, earthing and cable ampacity studies
• Perform COM reviews and workshops, and take part in Safety in Design (SiD) workshops while keeping design risk registers up to date
• Run quality assurance reviews so all deliverables are approved before issue
• Deliver outputs at Preliminary Design (30%), Developed Design (60%) and Detailed Design (80%) stages, and coordinate with secondary, civil, structural and SCADA disciplines
• Support construction and commissioning, manage RFIs, and handle scope variations within budget and programme

Required profile

• Ideally a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, including electrical transmission projects
• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering (or equivalent)
• RPEV and RPEQ certification
• Work rights to live and work full-time in Australia
• Familiarity with NSP/TSP standards and connection processes

Required skills

• AutoCAD and MicroStation for design drawings
• Good stakeholder communication and interpersonal skills
