Postdoctoral / Research Fellow, Observational Seismology

About the role

The Australian National University is seeking a Postdoctoral / Research Fellow in observational seismology. The successful applicant will join the Solid Earth Geophysics group, which has expertise in seismology, geodynamics, mathematical geophysics and rock/mineral physics. The role focuses on passive-seismic imaging of upper mantle structure beneath the WA-Array, a continental-scale array covering Western Australia at 40 km station spacing. The project applies anisotropic receiver functions and S-wave receiver functions to study upper mantle discontinuities such as the Lithosphere-Asthenosphere Boundary.

The position is full-time, continuing and contingent funded, with funding expected to end on 30 June 2030. It is based at the Research School of Earth Sciences (RSES), Australia's leading academic research institution for Earth and Marine Sciences.

Required profile

• Early career researcher with a PhD (or awarding of a PhD within six months of appointment) in observational seismology or a related field.
• Ability to articulate and pursue innovative research.
• Advantageous: experience requesting, processing and analysing passive-seismic data; programming skills such as Python or MATLAB for data computation and visualisation; methods for imaging the upper mantle using receiver functions; prior work with large datasets from continental-scale arrays.
