Phycology Technician

About the role

SGS Australia, a provider of testing, inspection and certification services, is hiring a Phycology Technician for its laboratory team in Notting Hill. You will help with algal identification, microbiological analysis and environmental testing, using microscopy and analytical techniques to deliver accurate results.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and analyse freshwater and wastewater samples for algal counts, species identification and biovolume calculations, with increasing autonomy.
• Carry out microbiological, asbestos and BOD testing according to established procedures.
• Ensure samples are processed within holding times and turnaround requirements.
• Maintain a clean, organised laboratory and keep equipment properly maintained.
• Support data validation to ensure the accuracy of technical reports.
• Perform routine instrument calibration and maintenance per documented procedures.
• Work within QA/QC requirements and NATA accreditation standards.
• Follow safe work practices, use PPE, and report unsafe conditions or equipment issues.
• Keep up with industry best practice and support the wider team with additional duties as directed by the Laboratory Operations Manager.

Required profile

• Degree in Science with a background in Phycology, Marine Biology, Aquatic Biology, Aquatic Ecology, Aquaculture or a related discipline.
• 1-3 years' experience in algal identification, gained in industry or academia.
• Hands-on experience using microscopes for sample analysis and identification.
• Desirable: experience in a NATA-accredited laboratory and in microbiological analysis.
