Operations & Asset Manager - Battery Energy Storage

About the role

A client developing clean energy infrastructure in Australia is seeking an Operations & Asset Manager for a utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The role takes ownership of the site from construction and commissioning through to commercial operation, overseeing safe, reliable and efficient performance while meeting regulatory, contractual and revenue objectives. It is a site-based leadership position.

Key responsibilities

• Lead daily operations, targeting availability above 98%, and oversee battery SOH and SOC, SCADA, EMS and BMS, coordinating with energy traders, AEMO and network service providers.
• Set up preventative, predictive and corrective maintenance programs, and manage contractors, OEMs, LTSAs, asset records, spare parts and inventory.
• Control operating expenditure budgets, contribute to capital expenditure forecasts and identify cost-performance improvements while protecting safety and meeting contracts.
• Build a proactive safety culture, ensure compliance with WHS legislation, environmental approvals and critical infrastructure security (CIRMP), and control battery and electrical hazards such as thermal runaway and arc flash.
• Lead operational readiness and the handover from EPC and commissioning teams to commercial operation.

Required profile

• Leadership experience in operational or project environments with accountability for safety, cost, schedules and commissioning.
• Experience managing long-term service agreements and holding contractors and service providers accountable.
• Electrical engineering or electrical technologist qualification, with substantial experience in heavy industry, energy, power or infrastructure operations.
• Strong communication and relationship management skills, able to handle competing priorities and technical disagreements.

Required skills

• Experience with lithium-ion battery systems, AEMO market operations and the National Electricity Rules is highly regarded.
• Familiarity with ISO 55001, SCADA and CMMS is beneficial.
