Mechanical Design Engineer

About the role

The Mechanical Design Engineer will design, develop and deliver innovative aerospace components, systems and tooling within Swinburne’s AIR Hub. This hands‑on position manages the full design lifecycle—from concept and CAD modelling to prototyping, testing, manufacturing and system integration—working closely with researchers, industry partners and multidisciplinary teams.

Key responsibilities

• Lead end‑to‑end mechanical design projects, from concept through to production.
• Produce 3D CAD models and detailed engineering drawings in a configuration‑controlled environment.
• Design and fabricate components made from composite materials such as carbon fibre and fibreglass, including associated tooling.
• Provide expert engineering advice and lead technical workstreams across research and industry collaborations.
• Mentor junior engineers, share knowledge and engage with stakeholders to build engineering capability.

Required profile

• Experience in design, prototyping, build and testing of mechanical systems.
• Proficiency with 3D CAD tools (preferably Onshape or Solidworks) within a PDM/PLM environment.
• Experience producing and managing mechanical engineering drawings.
• Experience designing composite‑material components and tooling.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Aerospace, Systems or a related field.
