Manager, Laboratory and Technical Services (Clinical and Simulated Learning)

About the role

James Cook University is looking for an experienced leader to run laboratory and technical services that support student learning and service outcomes. The position leads planning, prioritisation and delivery of services across Medicine, Nursing and Midwifery, Dentistry, Rehabilitation and Health Sciences, ensuring they are safe, consistent and to agreed standards. It is a full-time, continuing role of 36.25 hours per week, based at the Townsville campus; the candidate must be based in Townsville or willing to relocate.

Key responsibilities

• Lead planning, prioritisation and delivery of laboratory and technical services across multiple disciplines, facilities and campuses
• Ensure services are delivered safely, consistently and to agreed standards, timeframes and stakeholder expectations
• Optimise facilities, specialist equipment and other resources to support learning and operational outcomes
• Build a high-performing, collaborative workplace culture and strengthen cross-team planning
• Drive service consistency, innovation and continuous improvement
• Lead and develop staff capability, manage workload and performance
• Give high-level technical and operational advice on the feasibility, safety, compliance and resource implications of planned activities

Required profile

• Relevant qualifications and proven leadership experience in a complex laboratory, clinical, simulation or technical services environment
• Strong operational management capability, leading specialist facilities, infrastructure, equipment and resources in line with regulatory and compliance requirements
• Practical experience in risk management, incident response, compliance monitoring and continuous improvement
• High-level communication, interpersonal and influencing skills, and ability to develop staff and contribute to strategic initiatives
• Management experience in clinical and simulated learning, health professional education or a comparable technical service environment
• Leadership experience in complex technical operations, with diverse teams and a culture of safety, accountability and innovation
• Understanding of the service needs of practical learning in Medicine, Nursing and Midwifery, Dentistry, Rehabilitation and/or Health Sciences
• Knowledge of simulation technologies, specialised clinical equipment, high-fidelity models and simulated learning environments
• Experience managing complex service demands across multiple disciplines and locations, planning and coordinating human, financial and physical resources
