Light Gardening Volunteer with Patients

About the role

HammondCare is looking for volunteers to join its Older Persons' Mental Health unit at Macquarie Hospital in North Ryde. The role involves engaging patients in simple planting and nurturing of seedlings in raised garden beds, and brightening up the unit's new garden. It is a social visitor role focused on companionship, kindness and presence.

Key responsibilities

• Offer companionship to patients in the Older Persons' Mental Health unit.
• Gently encourage patients to take part in planting, watering and/or weeding in raised garden beds.
• Spend time with patients, listen well and enjoy social engagement.
• Help patients connect with each other and with nature.

Required profile

• Aged 18 years or older; HammondCare arranges and pays for a national police check.
• Meets NSW Department of Health immunisation standards for this role (HepB, measles, mumps and rubella, tetanus, influenza), or is willing to discuss meeting them.
• Commitment of one hour per week for 12 months or longer, preferably between Monday and Friday.
