Legal Officer - Prosecution, Townsville

About the role

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) represents the State in prosecuting criminal matters across Queensland courts, including the High Court of Australia, Supreme Court and District Court. It is offering three permanent, flexible full-time Legal Officer positions based in Townsville, North Queensland.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare prosecution matters and appeal submissions professionally and on time.
• Build and maintain relationships with defence counsel, solicitors, police officers, victims and witnesses.
• Represent the Director in court, including bail applications, sentences, committal hearings and appeals in Magistrates and higher courts.
• Work with complainants and their families, particularly in sensitive cases involving sexual or violent offences.
• Lead, supervise and motivate legal support staff.
• Contribute to initiatives that improve work practices and organisational efficiency.

Required profile

• Admitted as a Legal Practitioner in a State or Territory of Australia (admission date required).
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills to consult, negotiate and collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders.
• Natural ability to mentor, guide and empower legal and support staff, and to understand the needs of victims of crime.
• Commitment to high standards of professional competence and ethical conduct.

Required skills

• Proficiency in applying legal principles and drafting legal documents.
• Strong advocacy skills in Magistrates' and/or higher courts.
