Legal Counsel

About the role

Munich Re is seeking a qualified Legal Counsel to support its Australian and New Zealand operations. Working under the Head of Legal & Compliance, you will provide timely legal advice on reinsurance, corporate initiatives, and life insurance matters, helping the business make informed commercial decisions.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal and regulatory advice on allocated matters, including reinsurance and corporate projects.
• Assist in developing and implementing legal and compliance solutions for business initiatives.
• Support communication with regulators, external counsel, and business partners.
• Manage external legal advisers, including scoping, instructing, and reviewing advice.
• Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, agreements, and other legal documents.
• Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of relevant legislation and regulatory requirements.
• Identify and escalate legal risks, supporting appropriate risk management.

Required profile

• Qualified lawyer with 4‑7 years post‑qualification experience, preferably from a mid/top‑tier law firm or in‑house role.
• Experience advising on reinsurance, general insurance, life insurance, corporate/commercial law, and regulatory compliance.
• Proven ability to draft and review commercial agreements, including insurance contracts and reinsurance treaties.
• Strong legal research and drafting skills.
• Ability to work effectively under supervision and communicate legal concepts to non‑legal stakeholders.
