Lecturer / Senior Lecturer – Mathematical Data Science

About the role

The University of Melbourne is seeking a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Mathematical Data Science within the School of Mathematics and Statistics. This tenure‑track position will expand the school’s expertise in mathematics, statistics and data‑driven research, and contribute to high‑impact teaching and research.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and lead an independent, high‑quality research programme in mathematical physics or data science, publishing in leading journals and presenting at conferences.
• Secure external research funding and supervise MSc and PhD students in an inclusive research environment.
• Design, deliver and assess undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including curriculum development and use of modern teaching technologies.
• Provide academic mentoring, oversee coursework programmes and support diverse student groups.
• Contribute to school, university and disciplinary service through leadership, committees and professional activities.

Required profile

• PhD (or equivalent) in mathematics, statistics, mathematical physics or a closely related discipline.
• Demonstrated research excellence with strong publications and an emerging or established international reputation.
• Evidence of ability to attract competitive research funding and build collaborative networks.
• Experience in teaching and supervising at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
• Commitment to collegial service and engagement with diverse communities.
