Junior Software Engineer

About the role

As a Junior Software Engineer you will join an engineering delivery team at Leidos Australia, supporting the development, testing, integration and maintenance of software components for enterprise and mission‑critical systems. Working under close supervision you will apply foundational software engineering practices within a secure, structured environment and gain hands‑on experience on nationally significant programs.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, configure and test software components in line with defined requirements and engineering standards.
• Contribute to all phases of the Software Development Life Cycle, including build, integration, testing and deployment support.
• Implement and maintain code using approved programming languages, frameworks, APIs and design patterns.
• Perform unit testing, troubleshoot technical issues and resolve routine software defects, escalating when necessary.
• Collaborate with senior engineers to clarify requirements, support delivery outcomes and assist with system integration activities.
• Maintain technical documentation and follow engineering, security and ITIL‑aligned service management processes.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology or a related discipline, or equivalent vocational training/industry experience.
• Foundational experience or exposure to software development through academic projects, internships or enterprise environments.
• Understanding of software development lifecycle practices.
• Experience with modern programming languages such as Java, JavaScript, C# or Python.
