Junior Software Engineer – 12‑Month Contract

About the role

Alcon is seeking a motivated Junior Software Engineer to join a multidisciplinary team developing the analytical software for the Unity DX instrument. This 12‑month fixed‑term position offers hands‑on experience with medical imaging technology and the chance to contribute to real features from day one.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain components of a numerical image‑processing pipeline in compliance with ISO/IEC 62304.
• Develop algorithms for signal extraction, filtering, segmentation, and geometric analysis.
• Investigate defects, improve test coverage, and reduce technical debt.
• Translate scientific requirements into reliable, well‑tested software systems.
• Participate in code reviews and technical discussions, gradually taking ownership of modules.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, physics, engineering or a related field.
• Strong problem‑solving ability in linear algebra, calculus, digital signal and image processing.
• Curiosity, eagerness to learn, and ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment.

Required skills

• Proficiency in C++ and modern C++ standard‑library data structures, algorithms, and memory management.
• Object‑oriented programming and data‑oriented design principles.
• Experience with Git, continuous integration, and collaborative development workflows.
• Familiarity with Python and basic machine‑learning concepts.
• Knowledge of performance‑critical systems, GPU programming (CUDA), and scientific computing libraries such as Eigen or ITK.
