Junior Lighting Technical Director (6‑month contract)

About the role

Framestore is seeking a Junior Lighting Technical Director to join its Melbourne studio on a six‑month fixed‑term contract (October 2026 – March 2027). The role supports the creation of high‑end, photorealistic visual effects by lighting and rendering elements for feature film and episodic projects.

Key responsibilities

• Assemble CG scenes with assets from various departments and light shots according to the Visual Effects/CG Supervisor’s brief.
• Collaborate with CG Supervisors to determine lighting approaches and develop the final look of shots.
• Develop shots alongside compositors, render non‑lighting passes, and create efficient render farm setups.
• Replicate real‑world light colours and directions in CG, manage asset wrangling, and ensure schedule adherence.

Required profile

• Strong organisational and communication skills, able to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
• Creative problem‑solver with attention to detail and flexibility to adapt within established pipelines.
• Legal right to work in Australia.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Houdini and Maya.
• Understanding of colour‑space and lighting techniques.
• Basic knowledge of Nuke or a comparable compositing package.
• Familiarity with Renderman, Arnold or similar production renderers.
• Basic Python and MEL scripting skills.
• Experience with Linux/Unix operating systems.
