About the role
The University of Melbourne is seeking a qualified lawyer to join its legal team on a full‑time, continuing basis. This is an entry‑level in‑house position designed for a professional with around three years of post‑qualification experience who wants to develop a career within higher education law.
Key responsibilities
- Provide clear, practical legal advice across teaching, student, research and engagement matters within the Humanities and Social Sciences faculty.
- Draft, review and negotiate commercial agreements with education and research partners.
- Manage day‑to‑day legal matters while receiving guidance on more complex or sensitive issues.
- Develop effective working relationships with academic and professional staff.
- Contribute to team knowledge sharing and process improvements.
Required profile
- Approximately three years of post‑qualification experience, preferably from private practice.
- Current Victorian Practising Certificate (or equivalent).
- Experience in commercial contracting and exposure to intellectual property, trusts, privacy or administrative law.
- Strong drafting skills and attention to detail.
- Solution‑focused mindset with a willingness to seek guidance when needed.

- Effective communication with non‑legal stakeholders.
