Editorial Developer (Front-End)

About the role

Join the Digital Story Innovation team at ABC News to turn breaking news and long‑form investigations into immersive visual experiences. You will work closely with journalists, designers and video specialists to build data‑driven, interactive stories that engage audiences across web platforms.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate with reporters, designers and data teams to conceptualise and deliver interactive news stories.
• Develop complex front‑end applications, charts, maps, infographics and 3D visualisations from concept to production.
• Integrate and test data from APIs, JSON, CSV files and databases, ensuring accessibility and cross‑platform performance.
• Mentor team members on best practices for data visualisation and digital storytelling.
• Pitch visual and data ideas in editorial forums and contribute to story planning.

Required profile

• Passion for journalism and storytelling through technology.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities, with experience in statistical tools being a plus.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a fast‑paced newsroom environment.

Required skills

• Advanced JavaScript, HTML and CSS.
• Experience with Svelte, React, Node.js and D3 (or similar libraries).
• Proficiency with asynchronous JavaScript, JSON, CSV and API integration.
• Knowledge of Python, Three.js, Blender, QGIS, Figma and Illustrator (highly regarded).
• Familiarity with R or other statistical methods is advantageous.

What we offer

• Base salary $117,000–$128,000 per year plus 15.4% ABC nominated superannuation.
