Director Professional Standards Regulation

About the role

This senior executive position leads a specialised regulatory function that shapes professional standards and protects consumers across Australia. Reporting within the Public Service Senior Executive Band 1, the role works with professional associations, consumer groups and government stakeholders to deliver high‑quality, evidence‑based outcomes.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the delivery of professional standards regulatory functions and support statutory decision‑making of national Professional Standards Councils.
• Drive improvements and consumer protection in the legal, audit/accounting and built‑environment sectors.
• Provide strategic advice on complex regulatory and legislative matters.
• Build and influence relationships with senior stakeholders across government, industry and professional bodies.
• Identify and manage emerging risks, issues and opportunities.
• Champion operational excellence, continuous improvement and strategic initiatives.
• Lead, develop and support a high‑performing team, fostering a culture of accountability and collaboration.

Required profile

• Thoughtful and resilient leader capable of navigating complexity and exercising sound judgement.
• Significant experience in regulation, legal practice, compliance or professional standards.
• Strong statutory interpretation capability and experience applying complex legislation.
• Outstanding stakeholder engagement and influencing skills.
• Proven people‑leadership experience, including capability development and culture uplift.
• Methodical, organised and solutions‑focused approach.
• Ability to remain calm and effective when managing competing priorities and sensitive issues.
