Design Engineer – Mechatronics (Heavy Equipment)

About the role

Hitachi Construction Machinery Australia is looking for an experienced Mechatronic Engineer to join its national Engineering Division. You will work on the design, modification and optimisation of heavy‑equipment systems, covering hydraulic, electrical and structural aspects, while supporting on‑site testing and installations.

Key responsibilities

• Design new systems and enhance existing solutions using engineering calculations, computational methods and relevant standards.
• Produce manufacturing drawings, test procedures, technical reports and quality‑assurance documentation.
• Identify, assess and implement project risk controls.
• Communicate design concepts clearly to internal and external stakeholders.
• Evaluate project outcomes against defined success criteria and customer deliverables.
• Travel to field sites to support testing, trials and equipment installation.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronic Engineering or equivalent.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in a design engineering role.
• Strong proficiency in hydraulic and electrical circuit design and schematics.
• Demonstrated mechanical design capability with solid diagnostics and problem‑solving skills.
• Experience applying engineering calculations and interpreting Australian or International Standards.
• Knowledge of welded structures and manufacturing processes.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred) and experience with Finite Element Analysis.
• Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to work independently and within a team.
