Cyber Security Engineer

About the role

Macquarie University is seeking a Cyber Security Engineer to design, implement and maintain security controls that protect its digital environment. Reporting to the Chief Information Security Officer, you will translate security architecture into stable, scalable technical solutions that safeguard people, systems and data.

Key responsibilities

• Design, deploy and maintain security controls across network, endpoint, identity, cloud and application environments.
• Configure and manage firewalls, IDS/IPS, SIEM, SOAR, EDR/XDR, DLP, email security, WAF, PAM, vulnerability scanners, CSPM and endpoint protection solutions.
• Embed cyber security principles into systems in line with university IT standards.
• Develop security automation using scripting, infrastructure‑as‑code and policy‑as‑code.
• Monitor and analyse security events to improve detection coverage and response.
• Support incident response with technical analysis, containment, eradication and recovery.
• Conduct vulnerability assessments, security testing and risk analysis, and implement remediation strategies.
• Maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders and communicate technical information clearly.

Required profile

• Proven experience in cyber security engineering, implementing and operating security controls.
• Ability to work collaboratively with cross‑functional teams and stakeholders.
• Strong analytical skills for monitoring, incident response and vulnerability management.

Required skills

• Firewalls and intrusion detection/prevention systems.
• SIEM and SOAR platforms.
• EDR/XDR solutions.
• DLP, email security, Web Application Firewall (WAF) and Privileged Access Management (PAM).
• Vulnerability scanners and Cloud Security Posture Management (CSPM) tools.
• Scripting and automation (e.g., PowerShell, Python, Bash).
• Infrastructure‑as‑Code and Policy‑as‑Code frameworks.
