Counsel – Public Defender Chambers

About the role

Legal Aid Queensland is seeking an experienced Counsel to join the Public Defender Chambers. You will represent legally‑aided clients across a range of courts, travel throughout Queensland, and help shape a fairer justice system.

Key responsibilities

• Represent clients in the Supreme Court, District Court, Children’s Court and Mental Health Court.
• Appear in high‑stakes matters such as sentence appeals, trials, bail applications and Dangerous Prisoners (Sexual Offenders) Act 2003 proceedings.
• Travel to regional and remote communities to ensure access to justice.
• Provide expert guidance, mentoring and feedback to lawyers during case preparation.
• Deliver training to legal professionals and contribute to strategy, policy and administrative initiatives.

Required profile

• Extensive expertise in criminal law with strong knowledge of evidence and procedure.
• Admitted (or eligible for immediate admission) as a legal practitioner in Queensland and holding a current practising certificate as a barrister.
• Exceptional advocacy and leadership abilities, with a proven track record of mentoring others.
• Commitment to social justice and fostering an inclusive, diverse workplace.
