Classroom Teacher - Special Needs School

About the role

St Paul's College in Balwyn supports children aged 5 to 18 years with intellectual disabilities, many of whom also have autism spectrum disorders, sensory impairments, genetic syndromes or complex communication needs. The college is looking for an experienced, qualified classroom teacher for a full-time position starting immediately, and one full-time teacher for a 12-month maternity leave cover starting now; experience in PE is preferred. The school is a state-of-the-art facility with a multidisciplinary team of teachers, teaching assistants, allied health professionals and a school nurse.

Key responsibilities

• Create a supportive learning environment for students with diverse learning, emotional, behavioural, medical and physical disabilities.
• Design, prepare, implement and monitor Individual Education Programs (IEPs) with Student Support Groups, including parents, carers and allied health professionals.
• Support school programs and activities, including excursions and Positive Behaviour Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
• Take part in Professional Learning Teams and contribute to curriculum development and evaluation.
• Supervise and support teacher assistants, volunteers and others in the classroom.
• Build positive relationships with students and families and visit alternative placements for dual-school students.
• Maintain class records, attend to students' personal and physical needs, and take part in playground duty.

Required profile

• Appropriate teaching qualification and current registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT).
• Driver's licence.
• Desirable: special education qualification, experience in a specialist school (Prep to Lower Primary), and some experience working with children with disabilities.
• Must pass child protection screening and follow the school's Child Safe policies and Staff Code of Conduct.
