Chief Engineer - Institutional Banking Technology

About the role

CommBank is looking for a Chief Engineer for Institutional Banking Technology, one of its most senior technical leadership roles. Reporting to the General Manager, you will shape the long-term direction, modernisation and health of critical platforms, systems and services, and set the direction for modern, AI-enabled engineering at scale.

Key responsibilities

• Set the engineering vision and technical roadmap, making the big architectural calls that shape the platforms for the future
• Lead major platform modernisation, moving from legacy complexity toward modern cloud, API, microservices and service-domain aligned architectures
• Raise the bar for engineering excellence across secure design, delivery, observability, reliability, resilience, developer experience and production readiness
• Partner with Product, Architecture, Risk and Delivery to balance pace, quality, customer impact and operational risk
• Identify where AI and emerging technologies can improve engineering, colleague and customer experiences
• Give engineering teams clear guardrails and technical direction
• Mentor technical talent, grow engineering leaders and build an inclusive culture

Required profile

• Deep technical credibility and architectural judgement in large-scale, complex engineering environments
• A track record of transforming complex technology landscapes and shaping modern architectures across cloud, APIs, services, platforms and SaaS ecosystems
• Real-world experience applying AI, GenAI and emerging technologies
• An uncompromising standard for engineering excellence, including secure design, CI/CD, observability, resilience, reliability, controls and operational readiness
• Influence to shift engineering thinking at scale and grow engineering capability
