Casual Academic - Mathematics and Statistics

About the role

The School of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Queensland is looking for casual academics in Mathematics and Statistics who enjoy sharing their discipline knowledge, explaining concepts clearly, giving timely feedback and developing teaching strategies across different settings. They are expected to foster caring, collaborative and inclusive classrooms and laboratories. Positions are casual academic appointments with no firm advance commitment to ongoing work.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver practical and applied teaching sessions
• Mark assignments
• Provide teaching support

Required profile

• A strong academic background in Mathematics or Statistics, normally with a GPA of at least 5.5 and at least 1 year of undergraduate study
• MATH candidates: MATH2001 (or equivalent); preference for at least 4 units of Level 2 MATH courses
• STAT candidates: STAT2004 (or equivalent); preference for at least 4 units of Level 2 STAT courses
• Honours, Masters by Research and PhD candidates are encouraged to apply; postgraduate coursework students with at least one semester of full-time study are eligible
• Preference for those who have completed higher-level MATH or STAT courses at UQ or equivalent institutions, and for STEM or teaching experience
• International students must hold a visa permitting casual employment

New casual academics are asked to take on and request 3 hours of paid work per week, including preparation, delivery and marking. Experienced academics can also apply for a lead casual academic position. Shortlisted candidates are invited to a brief interview.
