Backend Software Engineer - Product & Features (Java)

About the role

Canva is looking for a Backend Software Engineer to join its Product & Features team in Sydney. You will help design, build and maintain scalable backend services that power millions of user interactions across the platform.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement new backend features within an existing service architecture.
• Build, maintain and optimise APIs and services that support both user‑facing and internal tools.
• Write clean, well‑tested, production‑ready Java code.
• Collaborate with product managers, designers and frontend engineers to deliver end‑to‑end experiences.
• Participate in code reviews, pair programming and technical discussions.
• Improve system observability, write tests and resolve performance or reliability issues.

Required profile

• Proven experience building backend systems using Java in a production environment.
• Strong understanding of Java fundamentals and ability to write production‑grade code.
• Comfortable working in a fast‑moving, collaborative team setting.
