Associate Engineer/Scientist – Contaminated Land

About the role

SMEC is seeking an Associate Engineer/Scientist to lead contaminated‑land projects for its Sydney team. The role combines technical delivery, client interaction and mentorship of junior staff within a global consultancy focused on sustainable outcomes.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver contaminated‑land assessments and produce high‑quality interpretive reports.
• Conduct environmental, planning and risk assessments for a variety of projects.
• Support fieldwork, including soil, water and air sampling across multiple sites.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with clients and key stakeholders.
• Provide guidance and mentorship to junior team members.

Required profile

• Degree in Environmental Science, Engineering or a related discipline.
• Certified Environmental Practitioner.
• 12+ years of experience in contaminated land, PFAS and hazardous materials.
• Excellent report writing, communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Proven ability to work in multidisciplinary teams and manage project timelines.
• Willingness to travel for short‑term field assignments and a current driver’s licence.
