About the role
The Assistant Public Defender will join the Southport office of the Public Defender service, providing high‑level advocacy and legal support across Queensland courts. This permanent full‑time role involves representing accused persons, advising senior staff, and contributing to policy and training initiatives.
Key responsibilities
- Advise on and argue appeals in the Court of Appeal and the High Court.
- Appear as counsel in complex, sensitive, or difficult trials in the Supreme and District Courts, including fraud matters, Mental Health Court, and Dangerous Prisoners (Sexual Offenders) Act proceedings.
- Handle appeals to the District Court, committals, summary trials, family law, and civil litigation as junior counsel.
- Travel throughout Queensland, including remote communities, to manage case listings and resolutions.
- Guide lawyers in case preparation, provide feedback, mentoring, and legal advice to the Public Defender and LAQ criminal practice.
- Deliver training, mentor staff, and advise on strategy, policy, and administrative issues.
- Liaise with courts and stakeholders to support the administration of justice.
Required profile
- Extensive advocacy experience in appeals and trials across a broad range of criminal matters.
- Strong command of evidence, procedure, and the ability to represent accused persons effectively.
- Excellent communication skills, especially under pressure.
- Ability to contribute to criminal justice strategy and policy development.
