Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer

About the role

The Department of Education is establishing a pool of Aboriginal and Islander Education Officers (AIEOs) for permanent and fixed-term, full-time vacancies that may arise during the 2027 school year, with appointments possible at any time for vacancies starting then. The position is based in the Gascoyne Region, Western Australia, and is open only to Aboriginal applicants, as Aboriginality is a genuine occupational qualification.

Key responsibilities

• Assist teachers in delivering planned education programs and in creating a supportive, inclusive learning environment.
• Help students access the educational program and better understand the multicultural nature of the school.
• Act as a liaison between the community and the school to develop an educational program that meets both educational and cultural needs.
• Support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, particularly those at risk, through mentoring and pastoral care to encourage participation and achievement.
• Be culturally responsive and help school staff implement the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework.

Required profile

• Must be Aboriginal; the position is advertised only to Aboriginal applicants.
• Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or holder of a valid visa with relevant work rights for the term of the appointment.
• Valid Working with Children Check obtained before starting.
• Consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and a current Screening Clearance Number from the Department of Education's Screening Unit.
