Interdisciplinary Engineer – Mechanical/Electronics Systems

About the role

The Department of the Navy seeks an Interdisciplinary Engineer to provide technical direction for mechanical and electronics engineering requirements on surface ship and submarine systems. This position supports non‑nuclear work, conducts advanced engineering studies, and acts as a subject‑matter expert for ship platforms.

Key responsibilities

• Lead mechanical/electronics engineering efforts for ship and submarine components.
• Conduct independent and collaborative engineering studies, investigations, and analyses to solve complex problems.
• Serve as technical advisor and ship platform subject‑matter expert.
• Oversee troubleshooting during installation, grooming, and testing phases.
• Partner with shops and program analysts to develop and implement process‑improvement initiatives.
• Liaise with production, operations, logistics, and acquisition departments to resolve technical issues rapidly.

Required profile

• U.S. citizenship and eligibility for federal employment.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. passport; travel overseas as required.
• Pass E‑Verify and pre‑appointment physical examination.
• Compliance with time‑in‑grade requirements for GS positions.
