Head of Legal

About the role

MYOB, a business management solutions provider for Australia and New Zealand, is looking for a Head of Legal to lead its legal operations across both countries. Working closely with the General Counsel, you will be the operational engine of the team, delivering commercially focused, high-quality advice. The role is based in Melbourne.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and develop a team of legal professionals, including Senior Legal Counsels, by guiding, mentoring, allocating work and managing performance
• Set the standards of work, refine templates and playbooks, and champion legal technology, automation and AI-enabled tools to reduce manual effort and improve turnaround times
• Act as a senior adviser to the Executive and Senior Leadership teams on complex commercial, technology, corporate and regulatory matters
• Own the legal budget and external spend, managing panel relationships for quality and value
• Lead high-value transactions and strategic partnerships, and oversee disputes, privacy, AI governance and regulatory engagement with the Risk & Compliance team
• Depute the General Counsel when needed, including supporting corporate governance and company secretarial activities

Required profile

• At least 10 years' post-qualification experience, with strong commercial and technology experience from a quality law firm or in-house team (substantial in-house experience highly preferred)
• Bachelor of Laws (or equivalent) and admission to practice in Australia, with a current practising certificate (or eligibility to hold one)
• Experience in SaaS, scale-up or a regulated technology business is a big plus

Required skills

• Successfully led and developed an in-house legal team, managing budgets, resourcing and work allocation
• Deep commercial drafting and negotiation skills, with a grasp of technology contracting, IP, privacy, data and consumer law
• Comfortable working with product and tech teams and using AI tools to improve legal work
• Ability to influence senior stakeholders and explain complex legal concepts simply
• Adaptability in a fast-paced environment, making well-reasoned decisions with imperfect information
