Head of Engineering Design (Transformation Lead)

About the role

A large, complex, asset-intensive organisation is seeking an accomplished engineering leader to lead a significant transformation and establish a contemporary Engineering Design Practice. Reporting to the Executive Leadership Team, the role defines the vision, designs the operating model and leads implementation of a best-practice engineering function, supporting critical infrastructure, operational assets and major capital investment programs.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement a new enterprise-wide Engineering Design Practice and develop a multi-year transformation roadmap
• Establish an operating model, governance frameworks, standards, policies, procedures and assurance processes, including design review and technical approval
• Strengthen risk management, safety, quality and regulatory compliance
• Build workforce planning, competency frameworks, career pathways and succession planning, and drive talent development and mentoring
• Optimise engineering service delivery, improve collaboration with operations, maintenance and project teams, and support major infrastructure and capital projects
• Build partnerships across engineering, project delivery, asset management, operations, safety, risk, procurement and executive stakeholders

Required profile

• Australian citizenship
• Degree in Engineering and Chartered Professional Engineer status or equivalent
• Senior leadership experience in engineering services, design, infrastructure, asset-intensive industries or technical organisations
• Proven track record leading large-scale organisational transformation
• Experience developing operating models, governance frameworks and assurance systems
• Experience in large, multidisciplinary, matrix organisations and strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills
• Commercial, financial and strategic planning capability

Experience in energy and utilities, major infrastructure, transport and rail, resources and mining, manufacturing, defence, water or heavy industry is highly regarded; experience establishing engineering centres of excellence, shared services or enterprise engineering functions is particularly valuable.
