Detail Designer – Australian Maritime Defence Program

About the role

Bastion Defence is seeking experienced Detail Designers to support Australia’s sovereign naval shipbuilding industry on a major maritime defence programme. You will deliver accurate, compliant, and high‑quality design and detail drafting for ship systems, equipment, and production activities.

Key responsibilities

• Produce and maintain detailed drawings, assemblies, parts lists and technical documents.
• Draft in accordance with standards such as DEF(AUST) 5085, AS1100, AS/NZS 1102 and geometric tolerancing.
• Apply configuration and change control to approved design updates.
• Use CAD and document‑management systems (e.g., Windchill, Teamcenter).
• Liaise with engineers, production teams, suppliers and customers to resolve technical issues.
• Ensure work meets engineering, quality, safety, schedule and cost requirements.
• Identify and resolve drafting and design issues, communicating progress, risks and issues professionally.
• Utilise Global Combat Ship‑Australia (GCS‑A) core engineering tools (AutoCAD, FORAN, Windchill, AVEVA ERM, CMPIC) for Stage 2 (Spatial Integration) and Stage 3 (Production Outputs) work.
• Coordinate drafting tasks, review work for accuracy and compliance, and mentor junior draftspersons.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of drafting processes and assist with risk and safety hazard identification.

Required profile

• Engineering qualification or equivalent experience.
• Strong CAD and drafting capability.
• Solid understanding of engineering and drafting standards.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Well‑organised, accountable and quality‑focused.
