Cyber Security Engineer – Defence Projects

About the role

Join Downer Professional Services in Canberra as a Cyber Security Engineer, supporting Defence Joint CJC03 projects. You will design, implement and maintain ICT systems and security controls that meet Australian Defence frameworks.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement and maintain ICT systems and security controls aligned to ISM, Essential 8 and NIST standards.
• Provide secure system administration, configuration and change management across enterprise environments.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to deliver resilient, compliant solutions for the CJC03 program.
• Monitor, assess and respond to vulnerabilities, threats and compliance gaps in network and cloud environments.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of the cyber security posture, including documentation, risk assessments and accreditation activities.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Systems Engineering, IT or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
• Industry certifications such as CISSP, CISM or CISA (or working towards).
• Strong understanding of ISM, Essential 8 and NIST SP 800‑55 frameworks.
• Experience in ICT system administration, networking, security controls implementation and change management.
• Familiarity with Windows Server, Linux, macOS, VMware/Hyper‑V, AWS/Azure/GCP and security tooling (firewalls, IDS, endpoint protection).
• Defence environment experience (e.g., CASG) and ability to hold an AGSVA security clearance; ITAR compliance may be required.
