Associate Engineer – Combined Services Route (CSR) – Rail & Metro

About the role

SMEC, part of Surbana Jurong, is looking for an Associate Engineer to lead Combined Services Route (CSR) design for rail and metro projects in Sydney. The role focuses on delivering high‑quality, coordinated designs for rail utility infrastructure while working closely with multidisciplinary teams.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure design development complies with relevant technical standards, client requirements and SMEC guidelines.
• Collaborate proactively with other disciplines, project managers, clients and stakeholders to produce coordinated, high‑quality designs.
• Apply project management principles to meet deliverables on time and within scope.
• Lead the CSR package, coordinating design, safety‑in‑design considerations and construction, maintenance and operations requirements.
• Deliver major CSR designs on rail infrastructure projects across ANZ.

Required profile

• Minimum 8 years of experience in an engineering design consultancy.
• In‑depth knowledge of rail utility engineering and design according to AMB, Australian Standards and related guidelines.
• Professional Engineer registration (CPEng) preferred.
• Strong communication skills to lead CSR packages and work with multidisciplinary teams.

Required skills

• 3D BIM modelling of CSR routes.
• Proficiency with industry 3D software such as 12D, Civil 3D and Navisworks.
• Knowledge of Safety in Design principles.
• Understanding of construction, maintenance and operations requirements for rail utilities.
