Software Engineer – Defence & Autonomous Systems

About the role

Boeing’s Phantom Works Australia team is seeking a Software Engineer to help develop rapid‑capability solutions for Defence operations. Based in Brisbane, you will work within a high‑performing software engineering group delivering innovative, safety‑critical systems.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, test and maintain software throughout its lifecycle, meeting industry, customer, safety and regulatory standards.
• Translate customer requirements into initial software designs and contribute to architecture documentation.
• Develop, enhance and optimise software products for systems integration, including debugging and issue resolution.
• Handle user inquiries, troubleshoot technical problems and analyse feedback.
• Support the evolution of software processes, tools and performance metrics aligned with organisational goals.
• Document research and development activities for Defence‑related software projects.

Required profile

• Tertiary qualification in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics or Electrical Engineering.
• Australian citizenship to satisfy Defence security requirements.
• Experience with autonomous systems, electronic warfare, sensor integration and messaging protocols.
• Familiarity with Computer Generated Forces (CGF) simulation standards such as DIS and HLA.

Required skills

• Strong Object‑Oriented Design.
• Proficiency in C++ and Python.
• Advanced Linux development skills.
• Knowledge of autonomous systems, electronic warfare, electronic sensors and sensor integration.
• Experience with messaging protocols, data exchange, CGF simulation, DIS and HLA.
